Just because it has the most listeners doesn’t mean it’s the right station for you. If you do this yourself you’ll be spending too much money in the wrong places. Find someone who knows the business. I can help if you wish, shelcom@yahoo.com

As someone said, Arbitron is your best bet.
It’s a service that polls listeners on who they listen to the most.
Arbitron does it for major areas every month, San Marcos (Hays county) is part of the Austin market and is counted once a month with the rest of the local area.
However if you want just Hays co., the best is the county by county book from arbitron. It will break down the stations to exact audiences.. so if you are trying to go after say over 50 year old people, it will show you that sometimes the highest rated station in the county may not be the station you want to go after for your customers.

But if you are willing to try austin ratings… for the breakdown of the ratings, you will have to buy them like the county by county book, but Austin 12 year olds and older are published free every month…
for example here’s the one published earlier this month:
http://www.radioandrecords.com/RRRatings/DetailsPage.aspx?MID=18&RY=2007&RQ=2&MP=2&OTHER=2&MN=Austin&MS=TX&MR=42&12P=1252400&UP=7/10/2007%2012:00:00%20AM&SU=CM&BPER=7.1&HPER=27.5&OPER=&NSD=8/6/2007%2012:00:00%20AM&CE=0
showing that the number one station is a FM country station for all listeners 12 years old and older.
