I live out in the hill country of Texas, in Hays County.
We’ve always kept well-behaved, collared dogs who ran around as they pleased. We feed any neighbor’s dog who wanders up, in the past they have done the same, just as long as the dog has a collar and tags. We’re fanatical about keeping up with their shots.

Over Thanksgiving, our 9 month old pup Sally was poisoned.
This morning, I’ve awoken to another poisoned dog, our 2 month old rescue Bobby.
Weak, listless, vomiting foam, bloody diarreah, dialated pupils, drooling, wobbly, drinking water like crazy, no appetite, just like our Sally did.

With the symptoms, the fact that the dogs never met and weren’t fed the same food, and the rampant incursions by coyotes in this area in the past three months, my family has agreed both were poisoned.
Our cats are fine. Our chickens are fine. It’s just the outdoor dogs.

Please, give me some advice on how to prevent this happening again. I’ve several younger siblings who love their outdoor dogs and now have none and I have a tiny indoor dog who goes out to play. The one remaining dog is a valuable therapy pet. I’ll be checking back repeatedly today.

The only way to stop it is to confine the dogs. You already knew this, I’m sure. Sounds like someone is poisoning the Coyotes, and your dogs are getting into it. OR, someone around your place doesn’t like your dogs roaming around.

I was in Hays county at night driving down a main road in a small town. I know the light turned yellow shortly before I passed through it but with a wet road and as close as I was to the light I could not safely stop. I know that it wasn’t red. I do not think it turned red while I was passing through it but it could have. A mile down the road, and onto the highway a police officer lit me up, pulled me over and told me I had run the light. On my citation he actually wrote speeding first, which I wasn’t because I use cruise control on everything, then he scratched that out and wrote running a stop sign but I didn’t pass any stop signs (I drive this road pretty often). The location is of the stop light, and I sure as heck know I didn’t go through when it was red, I’ve never done that.

In Texas, isn’t it true that if the light is yellow when you cross the line that even if it turns red a second later it’s not running a red? How can I dispute this? Do I stand a chance? Can I have it not appear on my record? I’ve never had ANY other tickets or citations and this really irks me. Seems like he was just looking for someone to pull over.
Again. The light was NOT red when I went through it. It was yellow.

Here’s the Texas law, which includes this:

An operator of a vehicle facing only a steady red signal
shall stop at a clearly marked stop line. In the absence of a stop
line, the operator shall stop before entering the crosswalk on the
near side of the intersection.

http://law.onecle.com/texas/transportation/544.007.00.html

So I guess your defense would depend on where the "line" existed.

PROLOGUE-
“Sorry I’m la-“ a pistol was pointed straight at my face as I entered the crowded class room.
“Stay away from our son!” Mr. Holcomb shielded Daniel from my puzzled gaze.
“What’s going on?” I stared pleadingly at my classmates for answers, only receiving shameful gazes and fallen heads.
“We know what you are, Riley Anne. All of us do, and we want you to leave,” Daniel’s mother clutched her son without looking at me. Daniel’s face was shadowed. Not with his silky chestnut hair, but with grief and despair, as if he had lost a loved one.
“Wha- What do you mean?” my stomach shriveled up to the size of a quarter and my knees buckled. Mrs. Holcomb pulled an old video cassette from her jacket pocket and released Daniel, slowly trudging towards the TV. On the screen, an image flickered. The video of our experiment with the professor in his office flashed across the ancient glass. It looked terrible.
“Who the hell gave you this!?” I slammed my hand on the desk, denting its hard black surface.
“We have a reliable source,” my teacher, Mr. Underwood, pulled the tape from the TV.

Chapter 1 – Party
It rained the whole car ride to aunt Kathryn’s house. Everything about the cold, dark sky reminded me of my Aunt’s unwavering forbidding stares. I didn’t know why Daniel and I had been invited. Perhaps aunt Kathryn needed to perfect her biting wit, or maybe had grown bored insulting the neighbors in muttered undertones behind a mendacious smile and lukewarm tea. If not for Daniel, who slept restlessly in the passenger seat, as if he too felt the oppressive clouds bearing down on him as they drew nearer, I wouldn’t have even considered going. Daniel had been my boyfriend for the longest time. He had been there for me, even if it meant sacrificing something.
The drive form Baltimore to Buda was unbearable. The landscape grew darker as we approached my aunt’s house. Passing over the Hays county line, a cold sensation trickled down my spine, as if I were pursuing death itself.
“Whoa!” Daniel jerked forward in his seat, slapping his forehand on the window of my Xterra.
“We just passed the county line,” I warned him, glancing at a six car pile-up on the opposite road.
“Oh,” Daniel whispered hesitantly, rubbing his slightly bruised hand, “How much longer?”
“About ten minuets so get ready,” I took the exit leading through a maze of trees, fading the atmosphere to pitch black aside from the faint glow from my headlights.

“This is her house?” Daniel stared in disbelief at the un-kept lawn.
“It’s farther back, you dummy,” I giggled faintly at his assumption. The last giggle I would probably have for an eternity, or at least a week. Suddenly in the blackness of the lawn, a two dim porch lights flickered in the darkness. The silhouette of a petite figure leaped out one of the mahogany front doors. Racing towards us was my aunt Kathryn’s daughter, Helen. I always loved to see Helen, especially when she visited without Aunt Kathryn. It was usually her that kept me from a spiraling depression during visits. Her blonde, curly hair bounced playfully in my face as she constricted me with her thin arms.
“Riley Anne! I’ve missed you so much! Come on! Come inside!” Helen pulled her baby blue night robe from the clutch of a dead rosebush inside the wrought iron gate, “Here, Daniel, let me help you.” Helen elevated our two massive suite cases in each arm, trudging up the wet grey stones. Auth Kathryn’s house was far too large for her pigmy self. There was an unoccupied second floor; the only exception was the bedroom. Below was a formal dining room gathering dust for twenty years connected to a kitchen the size of a small restaurant only used by Helen and the butler, Herbert. Finally there was a formal living room and a stunning tea room, commonly inhabited by aunt Kathryn herself.
“Allow me?” Herbert waited directly inside of the doors, prepared for anything we threw at him.
“Yeah, Herb. Take these to the two closest guest rooms, please,” our suit cases hit the tile with a massive THUMP! echoing endlessly through the vacant halls.

very cool!

One thing with the prologue though…it ends very abruptly on a not so exciting line…the rest was great but make the last line the best of all

and yes i wrote it

I will say it I’m a little jealous. that was really good. you have a way with words the story went fluidly no gaps in between (besides the prologue and chapt. 1)
My only advice for you would be to not cut to the chase so quickly and explain the characters more. Overall very good.

Chapter 1 – Party

It rained the whole car ride to her Aunt Kathryn’s house. Everything about the cold, dark sky reminded me of my Aunt’s unwavering forbidding stares. I didn’t know why Daniel and I had been invited. Perhaps Aunt Kathryn needed to perfect her biting wit or had grown bored insulting the neighbors in muttered undertones behind a false smile and lukewarm tea. If not for Daniel, who slept restlessly in the passenger seat as if he too felt the oppressive clouds bearing down on him as they drew nearer, I wouldn’t have even considered going.
The drive form Baltimore to Buda was unbearable. The landscape grew darker as we approached my Aunt’s house. Passing over the Hays county line, a cold sensation trickled down my spine, as if I were pursuing death itself.
“Woah!” Daniel jerked forward in his seat, slapping his forehand on the window of my Xterra. He must have felt it too.
“We just passed the county line,” I warned him, glancing at a six car pile-up on the opposite road.
“Oh,” Daniel whispered slowly, rubbing his slightly bruised hand, “How much longer?”

Suddenly in the blackness of the lawn, a single porch light flickered in the darkness. A small figure leaped out of the front door. Racing towards us was my Aunt Kathryn’s daughter, Helen. I always loved to see Helen, especially when she visited without Aunt Kathryn. It was usually her that kept me from a spiraling depression during visits. Her blonde curly hair bounced playfully in my face as she constricted me with her stick-thin arms.
“Riley Anne! I’ve missed you so much! Come on! Come inside!” Helen pulled her baby blue night robe from the clutch of a rosebush inside the gate, “Here, Daniel, let me help you. Mother is asleep. Are you hungry? Or just tired? Come inside.” Helen carried several of our bags inside of the narrow doorframe.

Are there any changes that need to be made? How should i describe her house? This isn’t the whole chapter just a small chunk.

Riley Anne is one person BTW
yeah i meant to change the first senctence lol didnt mean to. sorry!

Yes it’s very well-written. You have a good, professional style, better than some published authors! Can’t really tell where the plot is going from this excerpt but it seems like it’s going to be good. The only changes that need to be made are purely proof-reading stuff – your first sentence is in third person while the rest is in first,Aside from that, a few typing errors, nothing more.

Very good so far, keep it up!

next fall i will be moving to south austin north Hays county, any tips or guidance as to what to expect? i’ve lived in sa, Tx all my life and I HAVE TO GET OUT!! freaking city is filled with all I dislike!! are there any good places to live? we would like to rent a home or duplex, even a town home. bottom line is a back yard haha Any tips on where to or not to live and what to expect?

There are a number of really nice places to live here, depending on what you want. Traffic has gotten really bad, unfortunately, so I would definitely recommend staying relatively close to your work. However, not knowing where you’ll be working, I can give you a few ideas – I’ve been here for a very long time, and have lived in both north and south Austin. So, I’ll tell you a few things that are useful to know, though it may be way more than you wanted!

When you see Austin on TV, what they’re referring to is mostly south to south central Austin – roughly the area from the university (or just north of it) down south through downtown and beyond to about Oltorf. Most of what makes Austin famous (music venues, quirky shops, restaurants) is located in that general area.

Austin grew really quickly – it’s almost unrecognizable in parts compared to when I was a kid – and it isn’t always ideally organized, so it just takes a while to figure everything out. The suburbs north of town are Round Rock, Pflugerville, Georgetown, etc. – and a lot of tech companies are located up that way. They’re towns unto themselves, and have their own character, but don’t let anyone tell you that Round Rock is Austin – it’s not. It’s so different it might as well be in another state, but real estate people play on the Austin chic factor when trying to sell people on nearby towns. Honestly, it’s nice enough and good for families, but I would not recommend living up there unless you work there, because the commute into town from that far away is really awful. Actually I’d avoid the whole north side of Austin, for traffic reasons and for the fact that it just doesn’t have the character that south Austin has. There’s really nothing to distinguish it from any other residential area in the country.

If you don’t want to be in town, the suburbs down south (Buda, Kyle) are less expensive and less populous (and physically closer), so if that’s what you’re looking for and you have a family those would be great options. They’re in Hays County which has good schools and a brand new hospital. But again, it depends on your job location and work schedule – traffic coming into town is just no fun from any direction during rush hour, and living within 5 or 7 miles of your office can save you an hour in the car every day.

The most expensive real estate is anything near downtown (like the Travis Heights and Tarrytown areas). If you want a very sophisticated situation, you can even live in a condo or loft right in downtown, but with a family you may not want to be there as it can get pretty boisterous. The Austonian high rise is fixing to open on S. Congress – that looks pretty fancy.

The east side of town (east of I-35) is a mix of fixed-up/gentrified and also less glamorous areas. There are beautiful old homes in various degrees of condition; most of them quite small. The newer family suburbs and developments that are more affordable are typically located south of Ben White and also out toward Brodie on the west. If you keep going west past Brodie you’ll end up in Oak Hill (at the end of Ben White/71) which has some really nice and affordable homes. Also, for some reason, several developments have gone up recently along Slaughter Lane which goes east-west and crosses I-35. Just south of Slaughter, on the east side of I-35, is a golf course community called Onion Creek. The course winds through the community and though a lot of people think it’s a retirement community, it’s definitely not. It’s surprisingly affordable and worth a look.
